PM Receives UN Under-SG for Peacekeeping Jean-Pierre Lacroix

Phnom Penh– On the afternoon of Friday, July 5, 2024, Prime Minister Samdech Hun Manet welcomed Mr. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, at the Peace Palace.

According to an official post on the Cambodian Prime Minister's social media, Cambodia, once plagued by centuries of conflict, is now a nation that has found complete peace on its own. Moreover, Cambodia is actively contributing to global peace efforts. From 2006 to June 2024, Cambodia has sent 9,570 UN peacekeepers, including 818 women, to UN peacekeeping missions in 10 countries, such as Sudan, South Sudan, Chad, Central African Republic, Lebanon, Cyprus, Syria, Mali, Yemen, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

As of June 30, 2024, Cambodia has deployed 627 peacekeepers, including 125 women, in South Sudan (UNMISS), Lebanon (UNIFIL), Central African Republic (MINUSCA), Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), and Sudan (UNISFA).

Cambodia continues to be among the top 25 out of 121 countries contributing troops to UN peacekeeping operations. It ranks third among ASEAN countries, following Indonesia and Malaysia. Notably, for its contribution to the Cambodian Women's Army, Cambodia ranks 14th out of 119 countries and first among ASEAN nations.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Hun Manet and Mr. Lacroix discussed the importance of Cambodia's role in international peacekeeping and the country's commitment to continuing its contributions. They also explored further cooperation between Cambodia and the UN in strengthening global peace and security.

The Prime Minister reiterated Cambodia’s dedication to supporting international peacekeeping missions and emphasized the country’s pride in its peacekeepers who have demonstrated bravery and commitment in challenging environments worldwide.

Mr. Lacroix commended Cambodia for its significant contributions and recognized the vital role that Cambodian peacekeepers play in maintaining global peace and stability. He also highlighted the impressive participation of Cambodian women in peacekeeping operations, underscoring the importance of gender diversity in these missions.

The meeting concluded with mutual expressions of gratitude and a shared commitment to fostering peace and security across the globe.
